The Fine Art team currently offer 2 Higher National Diploma (HND) Awards in Contemporary Art Practice and Visual Communication Illustration:

Contemporary Art Practice: [HND CAP]

Contemporary fine art is without doubt one of the most controversial, exciting, demanding, expressive, stimulating, challenging, intellectual, searching, competitive and economically resistant of all the creative industries. This course provides specialist studies designed for the contemporary fine art practitioner, covering 2D, 3D, digital practices, and conceptual thinking. Participants will be part of an exciting and innovative fine art course that has sector leading progression rates into both professional studio practice and degree courses.

Successful graduates can progress to a variety of BA (Hons) degree courses including: Contemporary Art Practice, Fine Art, Sculpture, Painting, Intermedia, Printmaking, Environmental Art, Art Therapy and Community Arts

Practicing Artist, Gallerist, Curator, Gallery assistant, Gallery technician, Sculpture studio technician, Printmaking technician, Digital media technician, Curatorial assistant, Artist assistant, Studio assistant and Teaching assistant.

HND Visual Communication Illustration: [HND VCI]

This illustration course recognises the importance of the traditional skills of drawing and composition whilst at the same time embracing new techologies such as desktop publishing and digital imaging. All projects are student centred which allows you to interpret any given brief in an individual way. Core skills will be covered in depth, and you will be encouraged to develop creative and inventive approaches to a wide variety of set projects.

Core Skills:

The course also provides excellent opportunities to develop a range of generic skills highly valued by employers, including: Presentation skills, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Time Management, Personal Development and reflective practice, Communication skills, Employability and Citizenship

Previous students have gained entry to national and international universities at first, second and third year level, (SCQF level 7, 8 and 9).

Entry Requirements :

Entry to the HND courses is by interview. Applicants will be required to bring a portfolio of their own creative artwork to the interview and meet the minimum qualification requirement.

Your portfolio should demonstrate a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the subject area and a range of skills at the appropriate level with an emphasis on drawing and development.

Qualifications requirement:*

The minimum entry qualifications are; Either SQA or BTEC qualifications such as Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, NQ in Art and Design.

or

3 Higher Grades, including Art and a communication-related subject, such as English language, and two other Standard Grades, or equivalent qualifications. Mature applicants, without the formal entry qualifications, will be considered on their own merits.

*Note: candidates over 21 years old who do not meet the minimum qualifications requirements will be considered on the strength of portfolio and performance at interview.

Assessment :

Assessment is continuous throughout the year using a variety of methods including projects presentations, group crits and portfolio review. Regular written and verbal feedback is given. A Graded Unit is undertaken towards the end of years 1 and 2.

International :

You must have IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL Paper 513 and above, TOEFL CBT 183 and above, TOEFL IBT 65 and above. You must have a High School Diploma with good marks in subjects relating to what you want to study (e.g. 55% at 10+2 in India).

Awarding Body: Scottish Qualification Authority ( SQA )

Successful completion of either course will result in a Higher National Diploma. ( SCQF level 8 )
